The Shirley Traster Nursing Scholarship

Shirley TrasterAbout Shirley Traster

Shirley Traster graduated from Fort Wayne Methodist School of Nursing in 1950. She was employed at McCray Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse for 36 years, before retiring in 1986. As she began her career as a nurse, she worked in surgery, which was her favorite area of service. Later, she became the second shift charge nurse on the Med-Surg unit, and then also covered the emergency room. She dedicated the last eight (8) years of her employment to Home Health services.

Shirley was highly regarded for her compassion, wisdom, humility and humor.  She demonstrated her love of caring, compassionate nursing throughout her entire life, often mentoring or teaching younger nurses through her example and experiences.

Shirley volunteered as a service chairwoman of the American Cancer Society and with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. Shirley dedicated her life to caring for her family, her patients, and her church and community.

About this scholarship fund

The Shirley Traster Nursing Scholarship fund was created through the generosity of Mrs. Traster’s husband of over 60 years, Darrell “Skip” Traster, and their children, as a memorial to the exemplary life of nursing that Shirley lived.

The family feels that encouraging other nurses to continue their education through a scholarship dedicated to her name, is one of the best ways to honor Mrs. Traster, her values and life’s work.

The Shirley Traster Scholarship will award a $500 scholarship annually to a nurse that best fulfills the stated qualifications and career aspiration requirements.
